Workshop Objectives:
- To familiarize students with mathematical concepts using free and open source software.
- To provide hands-on experience in plotting functions, straight lines, conics, and circles.
- To enhance students’ understanding of the impact of varying parameters on graphical representations.
Content
Module 1: Introduction to Free and Open Source Software (15 minutes)
- Overview of free and open-source mathematics software: Mathematica, MATLAB, Scilab, Maxima, Maple, Sage Math
- Installing and setting up software
- Basic interface walkthrough
Module 2: Plotting Mathematical Functions (30 minutes)
- Topics Covered:
- Functions: Elementary functions i.e. sqrt(ax+b), sin(ax+b), cos(ax+b), |ax+b|, exp(ax+b), sin|ax+b|, cos|ax+b|, etc.
- Hands-On Activity:
- Plotting these functions using the selected software
- Varying constants a and b and observing the effect on graphs
- Key Learning Outcomes:
- Understanding function behavior through graphical representation
- Practical experience in software-based graph plotting
Module 3: Exploring Straight Lines (20 minutes)
- Topics Covered:
- General equation of a straight line
- Variation of coefficients and constants
- Hands-On Activity:
- Plotting straight lines and analyzing geometric changes
- Key Learning Outcomes:
- Understanding the relation between line equations and their geometry
Module 4: Conic Sections (20 minutes)
- Topics Covered:
- Understanding conic sections as sections of a cone
- Hands-On Activity:
- Plotting different conic sections (parabolas, ellipses, hyperbolas)
- Key Learning Outcomes:
- Visualizing conic sections and their geometric properties
Module 5: Drawing Circles (15 minutes)
- Topics Covered:
- Drawing circles based on given center and radius
- Drawing circles based on the center and a point on the circle
- Hands-On Activity:
- Plotting circles using the given parameters
- Key Learning Outcomes:
- Understanding circle equations and their graphical representation
Module 6: Q&A and Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Recap of the workshop activities
- Open floor for questions and clarification
